Redirecting Traffic Based on Device Type
This guide will show you how to utilize the dco.ink platform’s “Device Redirect” feature. This functionality allows you to automatically redirect users to different target URLs based on the device they are using (e.g., iOS, Android, Desktop), ensuring optimal user experience and precise app/content distribution.
Core Functionality: Device-Specific Traffic Redirection
The Device Redirect feature identifies the user’s operating system and device type. Based on the rules you define, it directs them to the most appropriate URL, such as an app store page for mobile users or a full website for desktop users.
Step 1: Access the Device Redirect Page
- Open your browser and navigate to the dco.ink Device Redirect page:
https://www.dco.ink/device.
Step 2: Set the Default Target URL
The Default URL is essential. It serves as the “fallback” target link for all users whose device type is not covered by a specific rule (or is not easily recognizable).
- In the “Default URL” input box on the page, paste your generic target link (e.g., your main website or a universal landing page).
Step 3: Add Device Redirection Rules
Next, you will set up rules to redirect traffic from specific device types.
-
In the “Device Redirect Rules” section, click the option to add a new rule.
-
Select Device Type: Choose the device platform you want to target (e.g., select “iOS,” “Android,” or “Desktop”).
-
Set Target URL: In the corresponding target URL field, paste the specific link for users on that platform (e.g., the Apple App Store link for iOS, the Google Play Store link for Android, or a desktop version of your site).
-
You should set at least one rule for each major platform you wish to target.
| Example Rule | Device Type | Target URL |
|---|---|---|
| Rule 1 | iOS | https://apps.apple.com/app-link |
| Rule 2 | Android | https://play.google.com/store/app-link |
| Rule 3 | Desktop | https://your-site.com/desktop-version |
| Rule 4 | Default | https://your-site.com/universal-landing |
Step 4: Create and Share the Short Link
-
After defining all your device rules, click the “Create Short Link” button.
-
The system generates a single short link. When users click this link, they are automatically sent to the correct destination based on their device, streamlining your distribution process.
Advanced Features: Customization and Control
Similar to other dco.ink specialized links, Device Redirects usually include standard advanced options for better link management:
1. Custom Short Code
You can assign a custom, easy-to-remember short code to your device-aware link, making it more brandable and shareable.
2. Expires At
If your device-specific campaign has a duration, you can set an expiration time. Once this time is reached, the short link will cease all redirection functions and may fall back to the Default URL or show an error.
By implementing device redirection, you can dramatically improve the user experience by delivering highly relevant content and simplifying app distribution across different platforms.
